Hip Protector Pads help prevent hip fractures and have been in use for years. Pelican Hip Protector Pads absorb and redistribute the impact of a fall, protecting the bone around the Greater Trochanter.
The Pads have cream foam on the inside to keep them comfortable during 24-hour wear. The foam raises the Pads off the body, allowing air circulation and keeping them in place.
Pelican Hip Protector Pants have two pockets sewn into the polycotton underpants. After putting on the pants, adjust the Pads over the Greater Trochanter. The pockets can move the Pads up, down, or side to side for flexibility in locating them correctly.
To keep the Pads in place, sew them into the pockets using a ball tip sewing machine needle. Regularly check that the Pads are positioned correctly over the Greater Trochanter.
The pants protect against falls during the night, but continuous wear can affect skin integrity. To allow the skin to breathe, take a break from wearing the Pads. If it becomes a serious issue, it may be better to not wear the pants. This can happen with any brand of hip protectors.
You can buy the Hip Protectors with Pads and Pants separately or sewn together. The Pads may not require cleaning and can be moved to new pants.
The foam pads can be sewn in place in the pockets of the pants. Please contact us if you require this. We also a cleaning service for the Pads.
Hip Protector Pad Options
- SuperSoft Washable Pads (Item # 179SSW) These can be left in the pants when washing them, or they can be removed and washed separately.
- SuperSoft Washable Pads – T5 (Item # 179SSWT5) Some older people are more fragile and less resilient to impact so their bone structure requires more protection. The SuperSoft Washable Pads – T5 are similar to the SuperSoft Washable Pads. The difference is that they have a thicker internal impact reduction foam.

For people who fit into different size categories we recommend selecting the slightly looser fit. The Hip Protector Pads are big enough to offer good protection without having to be very tightly worn.

This product may help with the prevention of pressure sores on the hips. Sometimes, due to the person deteriorating, the product may become unsuitable. Continuous monitoring is necessary and alternative products may be recommended.
What type of Pads are best?
By far our most popular Pads are the white SuperSoft Washable Pads (Item # 179SSW). They can be washed, and are generally well-accepted by a person wearing them because they are not too thick. The white SuperSoft Washable T5 pads are slightly thicker, offering better impact absorption. They can also be washed. The green SuperSoft Pads are good for situations where the pads do not need to be washed. All of the Pelican Pads warm up once they have been next to the skin, so they are all comfortable. All Pelican Pads were found to reduce a controlled force to under the breakage threshold under university testing.
