Hip Protector Pads have been helping to prevent hip fractures for many years. By using these pads, they can save some individuals at risk of falling from a fracture, or even prevent another operation after a hip replacement. Pelican has designed these Hip Protector Pads to absorb and redistribute the impact of a fall, especially around the Greater Trochanter area, to safeguard the bone.
The Pelican Hip Protector Access Pants are modeled after our standard design, but with a large cut-out section to allow access for an incontinence pad to be worn over them. This feature allows the carer to change the incontinence pad without the need to change the Hip Protector Access Pants, thus reducing the amount of manual handling required.
Another benefit of this product is that they can be worn underneath normal underwear. If the individual wants to use the toilet, they only need to remove their normal underwear and can leave the Hip Protector Access Pants in place, especially when getting on and off the toilet, which may be a difficult transition for some people.
Construction
The Pads have a special breathable foam on the inside to make them comfortable for the person wearing them. As they can be worn 24 hours a day, it’s crucial that they remain comfortable. The foam helps keep the Pads slightly off the body, allowing air circulation between the Pad and the Hip. Additionally, the foam grips the pocket material, keeping the Pads in position.
The Pelican Hip Protector Pants have two pockets sewn inside the polycotton underpants. After wearing the pants, ensure that the Hip Protector Pads are located over the Greater Trochanter. The Hip Pad pockets are big enough to move the Hip Protector Pads up or down, or side to side in the Pockets. This gives some flexibility to correctly locate the Pads over the Greater Trochanter.
If a restless person removes the Pads, they can be sewn in the pockets to keep them in the correct position. It’s best to use a ball tip sewing machine needle to avoid cutting the threads of the polycotton pants material.
It’s advisable to check periodically that the Pads are still located correctly over the Greater Trochanter.
The Pelican Hip Protectors provide protection in case the wearer falls when getting out of bed at night. The Pants can be worn 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Pay attention to the skin integrity under the Pad area. It’s recommended to have some time without wearing the Pads to allow the skin to breathe.
We offer our Hip Protectors in two ways
- With the Pads separately from the Pants. The Pads generally may not need cleaning, so you can take the Pads out of a worn pair of Pants and put them in a new pair of Pants.
- With the Pads sewn into the Pants. When ordering from the drop-down box, select the same number of Pads and Pants.
The foam pads can be sewn in place in the pockets of the pants. Please contact us if you require this.
