WHAT IS THIS PRODUCT?

The Bed Side Helper is designed to assist people when getting in and out of bed. It helps indicate the edge of the mattress and may reduce the risk of rolling out of bed. It can be used on most bed types that have a separate mattress and base section. The product may remain in place while the bed is made, or it can be removed during the day.

Multiple Bed Side Helpers can be used on the same bed, either next to each other or on opposite sides. For some users, this product may be an alternative to bed rails or belt-style restraints.

The Bed Side Helper frame is made from strong polycarbonate plastic that is easy to wipe clean. There are two cover options:

PHOTO	COVER OPTION	DETAILS
	Standard Cover	A removable, washable foam-padded velour cover with an external pocket for storing small items such as an alarm box, bed remote, mobile phone, or TV controller.
	Thick Padded Cover	A thicker protective cover designed for people who may experience epileptic seizures or other forceful involuntary movements. It includes thick convoluted foam with a soft velour outer cover and an external storage pocket. For safety, the hand slot is covered to reduce the risk of a hand or wrist becoming caught.

WHO IS THIS PRODUCT SUITABLE FOR?

The Bed Side Helper is suitable for people who require something to hold onto for support when getting in and out of bed. It may assist individuals with proprioceptive conditions. In some cases, it may also help provide awareness of the bed edge and reduce the risk of falling or rolling out of bed.

BRIEF INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

The Bed Side Helper is quickly positioned under the mattress and has two height settings. A healthcare professional can help determine the most appropriate position and height. It may be placed near the shoulder, elbow, or legs depending on the user’s needs. More than one Bed Side Helper can be used, for example one near the shoulders and another near the legs, leaving a gap for bed entry and exit.

An Alarm Pad can also be placed inside the cover.

Using a Bed Side Helper on both sides of the bed: Two Bed Side Helpers can be used, one on each side of the bed. This may require a Security Strap.

Using on low beds: The Bed Side Helper extends 11cm / 4.3 in below the base of the mattress.

Accessories for the Bed Side Helper:

	Security Strap with Loop	Provides additional support for users who move frequently and may impact the Bed Side Helper with their arms or legs. The strap attaches to the Helper and the loop is secured to the bed frame on the opposite side.
	Security Strap with Disc	Provides additional support for ensemble-style beds without rigid frame rails. The disc is placed between the mattress and base to act as an anchor.
	Floor Extension	Used when the Bed Side Helper is placed on soft ensemble bases where pressure may cause movement. The extension is secured to the Helper and rests on the floor for added stability.
	Alarm Pad	Alerts carers if the patient is leaning against the Helper or during forceful movement. It can be connected to an alarm box or Nurse Call Paging System. It may also be used by a patient to request assistance.

WEIGHT TESTING

The NATA Testing gives an indication of the strength of the Bed Side Helper. The weight used during testing may be more than a person would force when using the Helper. The strength of the Boards was tested by:

Applying 150kg / 330lbs vertical force to represent someone getting in and out of bed, or pushing down on the Helper.
Applying 50kg / 110lbs horizontal force to represent someone rolling against the Helper.

MONTHLY MAINTENANCE

Ensure all nuts and bolts are fully done up. If using the Security strap, regularly inspect the webbing for damage.

Cleaning

CLEANING METHOD

Foam: Remove the foam and rinse in water.
Cover: Machine or hand wash the cover.
Plastic: Wipe clean with a mild hospital grade disinfectant.

MAXIMUM WASHING TEMPERATURE

Foam: Warm.
Cover: 80°C / 176°F.

DETERGENT

Use a mild detergent. Do not use fabric softener.

DRYING METHOD

Foam: Air dry in the shade.
Cover: Air dry in the shade. Alternatively, tumble dry on a cool temperature and make sure the drum is cool.
Plastic: Air dry in the shade.

CLEANING WARNING

Only use and store the product when it is dry.
