Description

WHAT IS THIS PRODUCT?

The Bed Roller Sheet is used to help slide someone up and down the bed. It can also be used to turn someone, and assist them to sit up or stand up. The material is sewn into a cylinder so it can slide on itself. Webbing handles are sewn along each side. It can be removed after use or left in place under the person, beneath the bed sheet or incontinence pad.

WHO IS THIS PRODUCT SUITABLE FOR?

This product may assist carers who need to move someone in bed who cannot move themselves due to disability or reduced mobility.

BRIEF INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

This is a slippery product. Ensure slipperiness does not present a hazard during use.

Sliding patients up the bed:

  • The Bed Roller Sheet should be laid along the length of the bed.
  • Standing next to the patient’s head, hold the webbing adjacent to the patient’s head and waist.
  • Place a pillow against the bed head to protect the patient’s head from sliding into the headboard. Both carers perform a controlled backward lunge without twisting.

Turning patients side to side, or back to side:

  • To reassure the patient, always raise the bed rail or have a second carer stand on the opposite side of the bed.
  • When making the bed, place the Bed Roller Sheet across the bed with even overhang on both sides.
  • Position it under the hips, or depending on the patient’s shape, sometimes under the shoulders or hips. This would normally sit under a draw sheet or bed pad.

WHAT IS THIS PRODUCT MADE FROM?

Important

The International Standard ISO/TR 12296:2012 – Ergonomics – Manual handling of people in the healthcare sector gives some guidance on the use of this product.

General Manual Handling Warning: Manual Handling products are designed to assist carers to help patients. They will not make the carer stronger or fitter, but with correct training and use of the products, should make manual handling easier and safer for both staff and patients. When training, practise with an able-bodied colleague. If any procedure is not comfortable or is difficult and puts the carer or patient in a dangerous position, the participants should call out to stop the manoeuvre, recover and recommence. Never jeopardise your health by straining, twisting or being incorrectly positioned when manual handling. Always select the most appropriate equipment for the patient’s current condition and if in doubt, use mechanical equipment. Ask your Manual Handling adviser for individual guidance.

FAQ's

What is the difference between a Bed Roller Sheet and a Bed Slide Sheet?

The Bed Slide Sheets are simple pieces of rectangular material which are designed to be removed when not in use. The Bed Roller Sheets can be left under the patient (i.e. under the draw sheet), removing the need to log-roll the patient every time the sheet is used. Also, the Bed Roller Sheet allows for more manual handling techniques than the Bed Slide Sheets. The handles sewn down each side make this easier too.

The sheets are losing their slipperiness. What can I do?

If the Bed Roller Sheet appears to have less slip than normal, both surfaces can be sprayed with a silicone spray. We recommend Helmar H 4000. Spray outside over grass, so the overspray does not make any walkways slippery.
