WHAT IS THIS PRODUCT?

The ResQsheet – Bariatric Size is designed to assist in evacuating people who are unable to quickly leave a building in an emergency. It is stored under the bed mattress so it is ready for immediate use. A built-in plastic base board helps with sliding across floor surfaces including carpet, vinyl, and wood. There are three cross straps to secure the person inside. Some common names for this type of product include Fire Rescue Sheet, Fire Blanket, Fire Sheet, Ski Sheet, and Evacuation Sheet.

People can be slid down stairs during an evacuation.

Key features of this product include:

ResQsheet - Bariatric Size Press studs secure the cross straps in storage pockets, preventing tangling and improving safe storage. Plastic press studs are used to avoid rust and washing machine damage.
ResQsheet - Bariatric Size Rubber strips along each side help reduce mattress movement when getting in and out of bed. During use, the mattress edges lift slightly so the rubber is not in contact with the frame or floor.
ResQsheet - Bariatric Size Long towing straps at both ends allow multiple rescuers to assist without needing to bend down.

WHO IS THIS PRODUCT SUITABLE FOR?

This product is suitable for people who may not be able to walk quickly due to disability, frailty, medication, or sedation following an operation.

BRIEF INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

Fit the ResQsheet – Bariatric Size to the bed under the mattress. The elastic straps secure it to the mattress corners.

In an emergency, remove the cross straps from storage pockets and secure them over the patient and bedclothes, tightening as required. The mattress sides should lift slightly, ensuring the rubber strips are clear of the bed frame. If needed, place a pillow or blanket under the buckles to improve comfort.

Remove the head and foot pulling straps from storage pockets and lower the bed as far as possible. Follow manual handling guidance to slide the patient from the bed. It is recommended to move the person slightly towards the foot of the bed, then turn 90 degrees, and lower them feet-first to prepare for stair descent.

WHAT IS THIS PRODUCT MADE FROM?

Note: There is no Standard for this product, therefore we have adopted the testing requirements as set out in International Standard ISO 10535:2011: Hoists for the transfer of disabled persons – Requirements and test methods. This Standard covers testing for mechanical lifting hoists and associated lifting Slings. It includes a method for obtaining a SWL for a lifting Sling which lifts a person’s entire weight, which Pelican’s range of Slings adhere to. We use the same materials, thread and method of stitching our Slings, as we do for the ResQ products. An important difference is that the ResQ products are designed to slide, not be lifted, so the SWL stated above could theoretically be increased. Because people’s weight and size may be distributed differently between the chest, stomach and legs, it may be possible that the cross straps do not fit some bariatric people. If possible, we recommend this is tested before an emergency occurs. If this is the case, please contact us as we may be able to supply extension cross straps. Size: 210cm x 99cm / 82.5″ x 39″

Important

Manual Handling Warning: Products designed to help with manual handling must be used correctly to avoid injury to the carer, patient or user. We recommend practising in a safe environment with an able-bodied colleague. Immediately cease any manual handling movement at the first sign of risk or discomfort. Use the most appropriate piece of equipment. Complete a suitable risk assessment before using, and seek assistance where necessary. It is important to remember that manual handling products are designed to assist, they are not designed to take the place of manual handling.

How to thread a buckle: It is vital that a buckle is threaded on the webbing strap correctly. Incorrect fitting could result in the product not performing as expected, and may put the users at risk of injury. Click here to see our video demonstrating how to thread a new buckle onto the webbing.

Plan your escape route: Practise before there is an emergency. Be mindful of any obstacles that may impede an evacuation, such as furniture, bed footboards or headboards, and narrow doorways.

How to slide off the bed frame: Although we recommend to slide off feet first, you may have certain environmental factors which means that is not possible. For example, the footboard may not detach form the bed. Take guidance from your Manual Handling Trainer to determine the safest way to use this product.
