Description

WHAT IS THIS PRODUCT?

The Leg Lifter – Bariatric/Oedema is designed using a soft, medical-grade material that is easy to wipe and has foam padding to ensure comfort. It features a central raised padded section that protects the legs from touching while lifting or lowering. This product is ideal for people who have difficulty lifting their legs onto a bed due to obesity or oedema. Carers can either lift the patient’s legs manually or with a hoist.

BRIEF INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

Lower the bed so that the patient can sit down and position themselves as close to the centre of the bed as possible. Ensure they are positioned so that when they lie down, their head will be on the pillow.

Place the Leg Lifter behind the patient’s ankles and lower calves, ensuring that the central section is between their legs. When lifting manually, hold the lower loops with one hand on each side to prevent the legs from being squeezed together. Begin lifting by raising the feet slightly away from the side of the bed so the Leg Lifter does not ride up under the knees. Lift the legs high enough to clear the mattress, then move to the end of the bed and gently lower the legs onto the bed. If required, a folded Pelican Bed Slide Sheet can be placed at the foot of the bed to help slide the feet into position and reduce lifting effort.

If using a hoist, attach the Leg Lifter webbing to the spreader bar. Move the hoist slightly away from the side of the bed at the start of the lift so the device does not ride up under the knees. Once the legs are clear of the mattress, reposition the hoist to place the legs onto the bed. Ensure hoist compatibility with the bed prior to use.

WHO IS THIS PRODUCT SUITABLE FOR?

WARNING

Assess the weight of the patient’s legs. If a patient’s legs are large or oedematous, use of a hoist is recommended as the safest option.

Manual lifting of a patient’s legs using one or two carers should be risk-assessed for each individual to ensure the weight lifted is safe and appropriate.
