Back Rest Straps
- Important Information
The Bed Back Rest Straps make it easier to raise and lower a patient lying in a hospital bed. They help avoid the fingers being used to hold the small thin wire handle on a hospital bed. Carers can use their body weight to raise the Back Rest.
The two short gold straps are lassoed to the handles on each side of the bed base. The two Carers hold the most suitable loops, depending on their height and position. The long red strap with the non slip rubber material is lassoed onto the horizontal bar. One Carer can hold the ‘horizontal bar strap’ to prevent the loud metallic banging noise the bar makes on the ratchets. When the Back Rest is at the correct height, the bar can then be lowered into the appropriate ratchet.
When lowering, Carers take the weight of the Back Rest and one Carer pulls the ‘horizontal bar strap’ out of the ratchet while lowering the Back Rest down again. Consult your Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist or Back Care Specialist when using Manual Handling Products.

General Manual Handling Warning: Manual Handling products are designed to assist carers to help patients. They will not make the carer stronger or fitter, but with correct training and use of the products, should make manual handling easier and safer for both staff and patients. When training, practise with an able-bodied colleague. If any procedure is not comfortable or is difficult and puts the carer or patient in a dangerous position, the participants should call out to stop the manoeuvre, recover and recommence. Never jeopardise your health by straining, twisting or being incorrectly positioned when manual handling. Always select the most appropriate equipment for the patient’s current condition and if in doubt, use mechanical equipment. Ask your Manual Handling adviser for individual guidance.
