New Item – Clear See-Through Bed Rail Protectors

See-Through Bed Rail Protector: padded at the top of the bed rail, and allows people in bed to see around the room. The plastic material has smooth edges, tucks down next to the mattress, and has adjustable buckles to secure in position.
We are currently working on a new item – a Clear See-Through Bed Rail Protector.
The new Clear See-Through design uses a wipeable plastic material. It is only padded along the top section which goes over the rail, so it still offers protection for people who put their arms or legs over the top of the rail. For most people, we expect it to be more pleasant for the people in bed as they can now look around the room and not feel so enclosed. Although this is the major feature of this item, it may be a distraction for some patients if they can see around the room. Also, carers will be able to see the people in bed easier.
This item will also be good for Infection Control as the plastic material can be wiped down, and does not need to be washed in a washing machine.
We have two current types of Bed Rail Protectors available which are very popular but they have foam inside and the covering material used does not allow the people in bed to see through them.

New Item in Development – Patient Rescue Sheet – Padded (for non bed-bound patients)

Testing the new Patient Rescue Sheet
We have two types of Patient Rescue Sheets available (one for vinyl floors only, one for carpet and vinyl). These are designed to be left under bed mattresses all the time, which is fine if an evacuation is required during the night, or if a patient is in bed during the day. But for people in wheelchairs or lounge chairs during the day who need to be taken down stairs to evacuate, you cannot ask them to get back into bed so that they can be rescued!
This new Patient Rescue Sheet for non bed-bound patients will hopefully solve this problem. We are working on perfecting the design at the moment and testing it at a local hospital.

Falls Prevention – Armadale/Kelmscott Hospital Award

Left to right: Hip Protectors, Bed Fall Mat (Heat Sealed), and Stand-Up Floor Alarm…
a few of the items Pelican supplies to help prevent falls and injuries from falls.
We are pleased to learn that Armadale Health Service was the winner of the 2006 Healthy
Hospital Awards sponsored by the Australian Institute of Management. Armadale won the Falls
Reduction Category. Apparently our range of patient monitoring Stand-Up Alarms contributed
to their reduction of patient falls and injuries.
The project focussed on reducing the fall rate and minimising harm from patients falling
in the hospital. The hospital received a 20% reduction for inpatient falls in seven months,
leading to a reduction in the length of stay and the need for surgery.
The project changed the culture at the hospital and the staff felt pro-active in protecting patients from the risk of falling. More information regarding this can be found in Healthview (WA health magazine, Summer 2006/07).
