Pelican-Announce - November 2001

October's Pelican Port Winner…

Congratulations to Susan Gardiner from St George Hospital in Kogarah, who is the latest winner of the Pelican Port Competition. Your bottle will be sent out shortly. The number of entries were down compared to the previous month, so I'd encourage you to enter and be in the running for this month's draw. To enter, please email with "Pelican Port Competition - November" in the subject field. Entry is restricted to Australia only - apologies to our overseas customers, but the freight costs would be exorbitant!

Also, we still have a few needle & thread kits left to give away, so if you would like one please let me know by emailing me at & I will send it out to you free-of-charge.

The new products…

Last month we introduced two new products: the Sock-On (Item # 231), and the Car Access Strap (Item # 592). We have only received a few enquires about these new items, which is surprising because we have had many requests for them in the past. It is vital that nursing and caring staff know that these products are available, and I would ask that you make your staff and colleagues aware that they are now available. Again, if you would like any more information on these or any other Pelican products, please do not hesitate to email or call us on FreeCall 1800 641 577. Please click on the links below to view the instruction sheets for these two items:

Another new Product…

In a few weeks we should have another new product ready: the Stocking Slider - Enclosed Toe. We have heard of cases where Carers have had to be called out only to put on a compression stocking. This item will allow the patient to put the compression stockings on themselves, saving time for Carers and allowing the patient to have greater independence. Next month's newsletter should include more information, but if you would like to be contacted as soon as it is available, please email me at and I will let you know when it is ready.

Product Evaluation Form…

As Pelican is a Quality Endorsed company, and is committed to continuously improving our service and quality of product, we have introduced a Product Evaluation Form which we are sending out with some goods. The results from these forms will help us improve the items and increase the potential for new products to make things easier for nursing & caring staff, as well as patients & residents. As such, it is important that we receive this information. So if you do happen to receive one of our Product Evaluation Forms, it would be much appreciated if you could return it to us as soon as possible.

New Zealand…

After a few years of selling via an agent in New Zealand, we have now started selling directly to the hospitals and nursing homes, as well as through local agents. This should cut down on delivery time and will allow a closer relationship between our customers and ourselves, as we find our customers appreciate our telephone help. We sent out an advertising mail-out last month, so all facilities in NZ should be aware of our range of products. However, it does take a long time for word to get around so if you know any colleagues in NZ please tell them about us.

Pressure Pads…

The Pelican Pressure Pad (Item # 165) has always been a popular item, but recently there has been an even greater demand for them. Placed between the legs from the knees down to the ankles, it prevents pressure when lying in bed and is far better than using a pillow. Being a rectangular shape, it is versatile and can be used for other pressure care purposes. Please click on the link below for more information and diagrams:

Patient Rescue Sheets… This is an item we hope that will only ever be used in staff training. The Patient Rescue Sheets, also know as ski-sheets or fire sheets, allow fast and easy evacuation of non-ambulant patients/residents in the event of a fires or other dangerous situations. The Pelican Patient Rescue Sheets have two quick fastening buckles which come from under the mattress, up around to the top where they connect, effectively 'holding' the patient in the bed. An advantage of having these webbing straps is that once the patients are assembled outside, they should be prevented from wandering around. This also means that bedding sheets do not need to be removed. The sheets can be used for going down stairs and over rough ground, as the bed mattress will protect the patient. For a laugh…

Notice outside a second hand shop: We exchange anything - bicycles, washing machines etc. Why not bring your wife along and get a wonderful price.

Notice in a dry cleaner's window: Anyone leaving their garments here for more than 30 days will be disposed of.

From doctors records:

I saw your patient today, who is still under our Car for physical therapy.

Patient has two teenage children, but no other abnormalities.

While in the ER, she was examined, X-rated and sent home.

Well, that's about all for this month's edition of Pelican - Announce. Remember, if you know anyone who you think might like to be added to the Pelican - Announce list and receive this newsletter, ask them to contact us and I can add their name. Keep in mind that we can now email instruction sheets in pdf format, so let us know if you need any more information on any products. If you ever need any help, advice, or have any comments to make, you can always FreeCall us on 1800 641 577, FreeFax us on 1800 641 477, or email We would be happy to hear to from you.

Regards,

Tom Bromberger
