Arm / Wheelchair Lap Cushion

Arm / Wheelchair Lap Cushion Video
Item # 416C (curved, 47cm between arms)
Item # 416CW (curved, wide, 57cm between arms)
Item #416S (straight, 47cm between arms)
Item #416SW (straight, wide, 57cm between arms)

Originally designed for wheelchairs, the Lap Cushions may also fit on some hospital armchairs. The Lap Cushions - Curved and Straight - are alternatives to a restraint acting as a ‘reminder’ for patients who forget they are unsafe to stand up. It can also be used as a small lap tray, for books, materials etc. Some CVA patients may rest their hands on top of the cushion - this may help prevent odema, as an alternative to a ‘gutter’ armrest.

If the straight version is a little too close to a patient’s body, the cover can be removed and the edge of the foam can be cut to size with an electric carving knife. The Cushion is an alternative to a restraint belt. It is possible for the patient to remove the Cushion, though any device that the patient cannot remove should be considered as a restraint, so the necessary restraint authorisation would be necessary and this should be fully documented.

As this cushion is invading the patient’s personal space, it may be better to introduce it over a period of time. Start off for about 10 minutes, encouraging the patient to use it as a tray. Then take it away for a while, before refitting it again for another 10 minutes. Gradually the patient may accept it as a tray and not perceive it as a restraint. This method may prevent the patient becoming agitated by the cushion.

WARNING - Only use a Safety Belt or Restraint if all other alternatives have been tried. Ensure Restraint Authorisation has been obtained. Restrained patients should be kept under observation, as their behaviour may alter and another restraint may be more appropriate. Restraints are a prescribed item. The wrong restraint or the correct restraint incorrectly fitted can cause injury or death.

Cleaning Cover and Foam: To prolong the life of the cover and foam, always air dry in shade. Cover: Spray and wipe clean or remove foam and hand or machine wash up to 80°. Do not tumble dry. Foam: Hand wash foam squeezing out excess water. Handle with care when wet. Do not wring or tumble dry.

This item may be of interest if you are concerned with falls prevention for aged care.
