Pressure Relief Memory Foam Cushion

Pressure Relief Memory Foam Cushion
The Memory Foam inside the cushion is made from two separate pieces of Memory Foam with firmer foam in between. This helps to stabilize the Memory Foam and also will allow the cushion to be reversed, so the patient is not constantly sitting on the same side. After a period of time all foam, including Memory Foam can lose it’s recovery quality and flatten out. This is the time the cushion should be replaced.

This cushion is 6cm. thick and is very soft. The patient will not be sitting too high in a wheelchair, compared to some other firmer and deeper cushions. The low height also makes it easier for short people to sit down with their bottom at the back of the chair. When brand new, the cushion may have a chemical odour. If so, remove it from the polythene bag and remove the cushion from the cover to let it air out until the smell has dispersed.

Two Grades of Internal Foam: This cushion is available in two grades: Soft and Firm. The softer cushions, Items 170MS43 and 170MS49, may be suitable for frail or elderly patients. Items 170MF43 and 170MF49 have firmer memory foam in the middle, which may be better for heavier patients. The firmer foam is very hard when cold but it will mould to the body shape when it warms up to body temperature.

Two Sizes of Cushion:

Most wheelchairs require the 43cm. x 43cm. size but some larger chairs may need the 49cm. x 49cm.

Three types of covers are available:

Polyester – 4 Way Stretch Cover, Item 170PC43 & Item 170PC49

This four way stretch material has been designed to wick moisture away from the body and is used in some sports clothing to help prevent perspiration build up. It also has an anti-bacterial finish. Cleaning: Hand or machine wash up to 80°C. Air dry or cool tumble dry only.

Waterproof - 4 Way Stretch Cover, Item 170WC43 & Item 170WC49

This four way stretch material is also designed to prevent perspiration build up, but is waterproof for incontinent patients. The waterproof material has been sewn together so the actual seams and the covered zip may allow water penetration. The material is fire retardant with anti-bacterial and anti-fungal qualities. Cleaning: These can be wiped clean with normal disinfectant or un-zipped for hand or machine washing up to 80°C. Air dry or cool tumble dry only.

The Heat Sealed cover is faster to wipe clean compared to removing and fitting a normal sewn cover for machine washing.

Heat Sealed – 4 Way Stretch Cover

This is the same four way stretch material as the Waterproof Cover. It has been compltely Heat Sealed to help prevent cross infection when the cushion may be used by different patients in a general hospital. There are no sewn seams or openings for zips, Velcro or fasteners. Our air transfer (Patent applied for) ‘Air-Tube’ will allow the air in the cushion to transfer to a ‘reservoir’ when the patient sits down. After the patient has stood up, the air in the reservoir will return to the cushion. The cushion can be turned over so the top section can be underneath and the bottom section on top. If the air cannot move, the heat sealed cover will act like a balloon. This will be uncomfortable and unstable and it may even burst at the seams.

Warning: Inspect for any cuts in the material or open seams before using. If any damage is found withdraw from use and contact Pelican Manufacturing.

Cleaning: As the cover cannot be removed for hand or machine washing, spray and wipe clean with disinfectant. Seek advice from your Infection Control department as they may over ride our cleaning instructions.

These products help with the prevention of pressure sores. At times with patient deterioration, the products may become unsuitable. Continuous monitoring is necessary and alternative products may be recommended. FreeCall: 1800 641 577 if help is needed.
