Heat Sealed Products
Pelican are now manufacturing a variety of products with medical grade vinyl covers with welded, heat sealed seams. By heat sealing the seams, we have eliminated sewn seams, zips, and Velcro. Infection Control Departments will welcome having products that are completely sealed with wipeable covers.
We use different grades of vinyl with different qualities of density, so softer covers are used when Pressure Care is paramount.  When the item needs a stronger cover, thicker vinyl is used and for some products we use a four-way stretch, water-proof but breathable material.
We have a Patent application for our ‘Air Transfer’ system that transfers the air from a memory foam cushion to an ‘Air Reservoir.’  When someone is sitting on the cushion, the air is transferred to the reservoir and when the person stands up, the air moves back into the cushion. Without the reservoir, the heat sealed seams would be under a great strain and would burst with the pressure from the air inside the cushion being compacted. This ‘Air Transfer’ system is also used for Speculum Examination Wedges  and other products where excessive weight is placed on the item.
Consult your Infection Control Department to confirm the heat sealed items can be wiped clean with Hospital disinfectant. The Infection Control Department may recommend other ways of cleaning that will over-ride our general instructions. It is even possible to hose or shower the products to remove excess body fluids.  A disadvantage of normal sewn covers is that the covers need to be removed for cleaning. The internal Foam may need to be washed or even thrown away. If the foam is clean, it will need to be stored while the covers are sent to the laundry. The time it takes to remove a sewn cover and then replace it after it is returned from the laundry, can take longer than simply wiping the heat sealed cover clean, as well as the advantage of being able to use the heat sealed cover again within minutes.
